Anthony Daniels Actually Asked For C-3PO To Be Killed Off In 'Rise Of Skywalker'

Oh dear!

C-3PO has been part of the Star Wars movies from the very beginning, but if Anthony Daniels has anything to do with it, the beloved droid will be killed off in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The newest trilogy in the Skywalker saga has seen the focus lie with the new characters with some of the returning cast from the old movies being pushed into the background – including C-3PO and R2-D2.

So, it makes sense that Daniels, who’s played the character since 1977 and voiced the character in most of his non-movie appearances, is ready for the end.

The final Rise of Skywalker trailer suggests that C-3PO will die during the movie as he tells Poe he’s taking one last look at his friends. The droid has featured quite a lot in the trailers thus far, including a scene of him being reunited with R2-D2, so it’s possible that he’s been given a larger role this time so it’s sadder when he dies.

Speaking with the Huffington Post, Daniels revealed he requested J.J. Abrams kill off the character in the final film in the Skywalker saga.

“Before filming this, it seemed like the writers had slightly run out of steam with C-3PO. I didn’t want him to just become a wall decoration. I thought he should have a big send-off or send-off that gave you finality, and of course, at the time, J.J. said ‘no way…’ But J.J. is notorious for changing his mind on a minute-by-minute basis. It makes working with him a vibrant experience,” he said.

But if Abrams doesn’t kill off C-3PO, it’s always possible that another actor will take on the role in order to keep the character as part of the franchise indefinitely.

Another possibility is that C-3PO’s ‘death’ could simply be his memory being wiped and a new personality being installed.

Do you think it’s time C-3PO said goodbye forever?
