An Unwanted 'Beauty And The Beast' Prequel About A Character We All Hated Is Coming

Hands up who actually asked for this.

Disney‘s live-action Beauty And The Beast adaptation was one of those films that no one asked for but people sort of just accepted it, flaws and all. Seeing as how well that approach worked out, Disney have decided to do it all over again for Beauty And The Beast, but this time it’ll be a live-action prequel series focusing on the 2017 movie’s most detestable character: Gaston.

Speaking of Disney, the GOAT team talk about retrofitting problematic TV shows and movies on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a limited Beauty And The Beast prequel series focusing on Luke Evans’ Gaston and Josh Gad’s LeFou is in the works for Disney+, and it will be helmed by Once Upon A Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

Both actors will reprise their respective roles in this prequel series, which will apparently dive into the origin story of Gaston before he sauntered onscreen in Beauty And The Beast.

If this sounds completely pointless and unnecessary, well you’re not wrong there. The last thing we really wanted or needed was an opportunistic Beauty And The Beast prequel that tries to explain why the movie’s most horrible character became the arsehole he is and adds nothing of substance to the overall story.

Does anyone really care what made Gaston into the egotistical moron that he is? Didn’t think so.

If there is one small crumb of comfort about this Beauty And The Beast prequel series, it’s the the composer for the original animated film, Alan Menken, is in talks to return for the project. Sounds like we’ll get some sparkling new tunes to go with this unwanted Gaston origin story then.

At this rate, don’t be surprised if we get a Disney+ limited prequel series on Scar or Ursula at some point.
