A Friends Reunion Won’t Bring Back The Characters, And I’m Ok With That

They'll still be there for you.

Friends turned 25 in September last year, and love it or hate it, it’s a series that’s stuck around for the long haul. Chatter of a Friends reunion has been floating around for the better part of a year now, and co-creator Marta Kauffman has given us the most solid hint yet as to what that could actually look like.

Nice!

Speaking about the logistics of getting the crew back together, Kauffman suggested a reunion wouldn’t involve bringing back the characters, but rather the actors themselves.

“If it was the right thing, if it were the six of them together reflecting, talking about their experiences, and the episodes, then I’m totally behind it.”

“Nothing scripted,” she said. “We will not do anything scripted.”

Ok, makes sense

I have to say, I’m totally on board with this. Some things just need to be left alone, and reunion episodes and reboots can very easily go horribly wrong. Heroes Reborn, anyone? The original ending of Friends was so iconic, and probably one of the best final episodes of any series, we really don’t need to mess with that.

An episode of all the actors together on a couch talking about their time filming Friends? Now that I would watch the hell out of.

We may be getting ahead of ourselves here of course, a reunion doesn’t have the green light yet.

Calming the excitement just a tad

After the show was taken off US Netflix, HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly spoke about a reunion, and said that “There’s interest all the way around, and yet we can’t get interest all aligned to push the button on it. Today, unfortunately, it’s still a maybe.”

While nothing is official, there are certainly enough discussions happening that I’m quietly confident that we’ll see a Friends reunion of some description. It might not be a scripted episode, but I’m totally fine with that.
