15 Reasons Why ‘The Office’ Is The Perfect Sitcom To Binge In Isolation

It debuted 15 years ago.

For some reason, even though we’re bombarded with so much choice of new tv shows to binge, I keep going back and watching The Office. Turns out, I’m not alone, but that’s beside the point. Now that it has been 15 full years since the show debuted on our tv screens, let’s reflect on why the show captured the hearts and laughs of audiences around the world. Here are 15 reasons why ‘The Office’ is the ideal show to watch while you’re social distancing.

1. There’s A British Version You Can Compare It To

If you’re someone who likes both American sitcoms and British humour, then for sure watch this show. Check out the U.S. version of The Office as well as the British version and decide yourself which version is better. Both are available to stream on Stan at this very moment! Spoilers: The UK version is very, very, very different.

2. Jim’s Proposal To Pam Is Literally One Of The Cutest Scenes In Sitcom History

If you’re wanting to cry your eyes out, look no further than this episode. Pam and Jim were the ultimate will-they-won’t-they couple and this scene was the perfect way to end that saga on a positive note. Not to mention, this scene cost $250,000 USD to make. Why? Ask one of the show’s executive producers.

3. The Show Was A Launchpad For Steve Carell’s Career

While Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy put Steve Carell on the map, The Office made him a household name. So, if you want to see where it all started, check out the earlier seasons of this show and I guarantee you’ll have a great time.

4. It’ll Teach You CPR

Don’t know CPR? Don’t worry! There’s no need for you to go out and learn from an expert, just watch the show. It’ll teach you everything you need to know, and hilariously too. Save lives, like this guy, and watch The Office!

5. It’ll Make You Think About How Ready You Are For A Fire Drill

How many times have you gone through a fire-drill at work and it’s failed miserably? Don’t worry, you’re not alone, just ask the workers from Dunder Mifflin. Check out this hilarious scene from the show and ponder if you’d react any better. Sorry to tell you, you probably won’t.

6. The Show Won 4 Emmy Awards

Steve Carell may have nabbed a Golden Globe Award for his performance as Michael Scott but overall the show won four Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006. We love an Emmy-winning series!

7. Mindy Kaling

That’s it: Mindy Kaling. She worked as a writer on the show but we definitely remember her for her iconic performance as the wonderful, chatty, Kelly Kapoor. Seriously, anytime she is on screen, I am guaranteed laughing.

8. It’ll Bring Back Memories Of Previewing Songs on iTunes

Honestly, what a time. One of the all-time best scenes of this show is when Steve Carell’s character is heartbroken and the only thing that’s helping mend his heart is James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover”. But, he isn’t willing to buy it. Hilarious stuff.

9. The Show’s Mockumentary Style Paved Way For Future Comedies

Each and every character on this show has for sure broken the fourth wall, at least once, giving us GIFS for days. Honestly, The Office walked so that Parks and Recreation could run.

Are you over investing in characters only for a show to get cancelled after one season? Have no fear, this series spanned 9 seasons and gave us over 200 episodes in the process, so any investment you choose to make here will be well worth it.

Fun fact: Mose Schrute, aka Dwight’s beet-farming cousin, is played by Michael Schur who happens to be the co-creator of The Office, Parks & Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place. So, if you’ve ever wanted to see a piece of entertainment with the creator in it, and you’re not the biggest fan of Tarantino movies, then The Office is the go!
