It’s been a big day for… Listening to...

Dear Every Girlfriend Being Dragged To The Movies This Weekend, Don’t Worry, You’re Gonna Freakin Love Deadpool 2

This ain’t your average superhero movie, ladies

WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT AHEAD

Roses are red, violets are blue, trust me you’re gonna f**king love Deadpool 2.

Yep, it’s date night and your man wants to drag you to the movies to see this flick about some superhero character that belongs to the X-Men but kinda doesn’t belong to the X-Men and you’re confused, and he’s annoyed because you don’t get it, and what is even going on with your life?

As you make your way to your seat, you climb the stairs reluctantly, shuffling your feet, all the while watching the dudes around you as you wonder why you’re bothering with a violent two-hour action-fest when you could be poking fun at how bad I Feel Pretty is instead.

But I have a glimmer of hope for you – all is not lost.

As someone who has never seen the first Deadpool movie, has never read the comics, and for the most part hates violence of any kind on screen – I couldn’t get enough of Deadpool 2.

I am so out of the Deadpool loop that I even did a little Google search on the way to the cinema.

‘What is a Deadpool’. Yes, I’m that switched on…

Luckily for me, prior knowledge of the film was not required. The only essential requirement was a good sense of humour and a decent gag reflex (get your head out of the gutter, it’s a blood and guts movie).

Deadpool is punchy, it’s fast, it pushes buttons – and it breaks the fourth wall in all the right places.

Most importantly, Ryan Reynolds is so good in the role.

I kind like it’s because HE IS Deadpool.

Reynolds’s character is basically the actors alter ego – a persona he can turn on and off, but one that never truly disappears from the depths of his soul even after the director yells “cut!”

This film does action meets comedy right. The jokes are fresh, the sarcasm has bite, and the script is self-aware.

In between all the laughs, there’s actually quite a few heartfelt and sentimental moments that I’m not afraid to say brought me to tears.

I know, right?

Deadpool 2 made me cry. There, I admit it!

Besides the full spectrum of emotions I apparently felt during the movie, I was also taken back by how awesome the female characters were.

Morena Baccarin as the no non-sense, no bullsh*t girlfriend ticked all the boxes, and Zazie Beetz as the “lucky” Domino was actual goals.

These on-screen women are smart, funny, strong, and can hold their own – with neither of them needing to be saved by a male protagonist.

In fact, they women are quite literally the ones who save him and are the true drivers of the film’s narrative.

I think the main reason why this film spoke to me more than most superhero movies is because it wasn’t so much about world domination or vendettas,  it was about the goal of attaining a family, of protecting those who need guidance more than anyone… kids.

Especially this little cherub, who is at the centre of the entire film.

Oh that troubled youth…

While Ryan Reynold’s usually gorgeous and charming face is a complete crater to look at throughout the movie, he does have a butt that won’t quit and the man can fill out a skintight superhero costume like no one else.

Sometimes you have to find your pleasures where you can, gals.

Enjoy ladies, enjoy.
