Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have confirmed the next movie in the series won’t be PG simply because they’re with Marvel.
Earlier this year, Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, meaning they now have the rights to a bunch of Marvel characters that were out of reach before, like the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in July new movies for both of these franchises are in the works.
But one question that was raised was whether the Ryan Reynolds-led Deadpool franchise would have to change their brutal violence, constant swearing, and other more adult themes – something that fans absolutely love – now they sit under the Mouse House.
A PG approach to Deadpool just wouldn’t be the same, but thankfully this won’t be the case.
Reese and Wernick spoke to Entertainment Weekly while promoting their most recent release, Zombieland: Double Tap, and said the next Deadpool movie will definitely be R-rated (MA 15+ for us Aussies).
“We’re always in touch with Ryan. We’ve got several projects with him in addition to the Deadpool universe. I think the party line and truth is we’re all still figuring it out. Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.
“Our feeling and Ryan’s feeling is that it’s got to be the right idea, it’s got to be great… I think once we collectively agree what idea that great idea is we’ll be off to the races. Ryan’s super-busy, we’ve got a lot of projects lined up, but we wake up thinking about Deadpool, and we go to sleep thinking about Deadpool.”
It seems as though Ryan’s been thinking about Deadpool as well after sharing this snap of himself at the Marvel Studios offices, joking about auditioning for the role of “Anthony Stark”.
The only worry with Deadpool interacting with other characters in the MCU would be the challenge they’d face if he appeared with more family-friendly characters. But it’ll be interesting to see what the team comes up with.
Reese, Wernick and Reynolds have also teamed up with Michael Bay’s 6 Underground which debuts on Netflix in December.
