Irony Isn't Dead: A Book About The Evils Of Plastic Was Sold Shrink-Wrapped In Plastic

Oops?

Martin Dorey has dedicated a large portion of his life to environmental causes. He’s the creator of the #2minutebeachclean, an initiative he started in 2009 to encourage people to clean up the beaches they visit, and he’s the author of the recently-released No. More. Plastic, a book about what changes people can make to their lives to decrease their reliance on plastic.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as conscientious as he is – something he learned when he found his book all about cutting down on plastic covered in plastic.

He took to Instagram to complain about the issue, writing:

“So, here’s my book. We toiled hard on this. We worked with the printer to make it one of the most environmentally friendly books this year. And then this.

It’s an absolute shambles, undoes all our hard work and proves, once again, that we are using plastic with our eyes closed. We are sleep walking into oblivion, using plastic without thinking because it’s what we’ve been doing, it’s the way we do things.”

He added that he wasn’t currently aware of who was responsible, but that his publishers were working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. His publishers told the BBC that they were contacting distributors in the US to rectify the issue.

His publishers, Penguin, told the BBC:

“We worked very hard to ensure our book was environmentally friendly at every stage of the book process. This photo highlights brilliantly the over-use of plastic in our everyday lives and I hope the small positive is that this image might make people stop and think, as we head into a busy Christmas period of shopping and wrapping.”

Fortunately, Dorey’s shipment of his book contained no plastic whatsoever.
