Scarlett Johansson On Why It's Not 'Too Late' For Her Solo Black Widow Film

"I really could never have made this film 10 years ago."

When Marvel killed off Scarlett Johansson’s MCU character Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame, many fans were left upset that she wasn’t given the right send-off and now that she’s finally getting her own movie, some people think it’s too little too late and more of an afterthought.

It must have felt a little insulting to Johansson to watch Iron Man, Captain America and even Ant-Man star in multiple standalone films before she got her own solo movie. However, the actress has revealed she doesn’t think it’s “too late”, in fact, she thinks she needed to wait until now for the full impact of Natasha Romanoff’s story.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Johansson said, “What can I say? Well, I think it’s already out there [that] it takes place after the Civil War and before the Infinity War.”

“A lot of people have told me that the film, you know, that the film should have happened before and they’re wondering if it’s too late for this movie now. But I really could never have made this film 10 years ago when we first started our journey with Marvel. Because it’s such a – it’s a film that’s so about, the character has informed this film.

“My journey with Natasha has informed this film and it’s a character who is a fully recognised woman and I think it has a complexity to it that is just delicious.

“Not to say that it wouldn’t have been something else and totally entertaining 10 years ago. But we get to do stuff now that is just good.”

The interview ended with Colbert telling her his theory that this is her final appearance as Black Widow because it’s her eighth MCU movie and black widow spiders have eight legs so that must be why.

Johansson tells him, “OK, you know that I can’t – there’s somebody waiting with a dart gun out there that’s like a Marvel representative and I don’t know where they are, but I know they’re somewhere out there. And I can’t say anything and now you’re getting me all wound up, I’m afraid something’s going to slip and my palms are sweaty.”

They also decided that Black Widow would win in a fight against Kylo Ren, watch the video here:

The first trailer for Black Widow was released this week with Johansson revealing not even she knew it was coming out and found out about it after getting a text from Captain America star Chris Evans at 5am saying it looked great. Watch it here:
