Ruby Rose Is Your New Batwoman, Not Necessarily The Lesbian Superhero We Need But Probably The One We Deserve

Before (maybe) appearing in her own show, Batwoman will debut in the annual crossover event between four of the DC TV shows.

Our very own Ruby Rose has been announced as DC’s new Batwoman, who will be introduced during the annual crossover event between The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow before maybe getting her own show, which will debut next year.

Batwoman’s real name is Kate Kane, and she’s a Jewish lesbian, making her one of DC’s highest-profile LGBT characters, and the first to have her own show.

Giving a lesbian superhero her own show is just the latest in a long line of LGBT-friendly moves from DC; between all of the shows that currently air on The CW, there are several LGBT characters, including Supergirl‘s Alex Danvers, Black Lightning‘s Anissa Pierce, and Sara Lance, Nyssa al Ghul, and Curtis Holt, who have all appeared across the Flarrowverse.

This is a far cry from Marvel’s efforts, which include creating two feature films about a pansexual character that manage to avoid the subject entirely and cutting a scene from Thor: Ragnarok that confirmed one of the characters was bisexual.

To be fair, they did introduce their first gay character late last year in The Runaways, but compared to DC, they’re a long way behind.
