Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.
There wasn’t much to dislike about Avengers: Endgame, but one thing that has stood out to many fans was Thor’s new look in the film.
Let’s not beat around the bush here, Thor, who’s known for his ripped physique, got fat. Not only that, he stayed that way, there’s no magic that makes him fit again.
To those disappointed in fat Thor in Endgame:
Let’s see how you handle losing your dad, mom, brother, best friend, magic hammer, home planet, killing your sister, and failing to save half of all life in the universe when you got the chance.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of the film, said it was their way of showing just how much Thor has fallen apart following the Snap. Asgard had been destroyed, along with nearly everyone he knew and cared for.
Joe said, “No, he’s broken and that’s who he is moving forward.”
“How is everyone processing their grief? We wanted them all to process it in very different ways. And Thor is an exceedingly tragic character who was built from the time he was a boy to be a king.”
“What is the distance that a character like that can travel, a god? Somebody, especially, who looks like Chris Hemsworth?”
Which is why they decided to make him a physical and emotional trainwreck.
At one point in the film, Rocket calls him a “melting ice cream cone”, even his mother, Frigga, asks him to eat a salad. But the Russo brothers say there’s a serious side to Fat Thor.
Anthony explained, “Even though there’s a lot of fun to be had in the movie with his physical condition, it’s not a gag.”
“It’s a manifestation of where he is on a character level, and we think it’s one of the most relatable aspects of him. I mean, it’s a very common sort of response to depression and pain.”
Joe added, “What would happen if that character became extremely angry and started to punish himself and didn’t care anymore?”
“What would happen to him? He’s an alcoholic now, he doesn’t care about anything. He doesn’t care about himself.”
“That’s the reason why we didn’t end up turning him back… It’s an experience that stays with him.”
At the end of the film, Thor gives the crown to Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, saying, “It’s time to be who I am rather than who I’m supposed to be. But you — you’re a leader. That’s who you are.”
He then heads off with the Guardians of the Galaxy and with a hint of optimism refers to the group as “The Asgardians of the Galaxy, back together again!”
Anthony said, “He may have made some repair in this movie and made progress, but that experience that brought him to that physical condition is still with him, and it’s a longer road beyond that.”
“We don’t know what that road beyond that is for him.”
We just hope that if we see him again he’s happier!
