Joe Russo Reckons Robert Downey Jr Deserves An Oscar For Avengers: Endgame And Same

"That is a profound performance."

Avengers: Endgame was the biggest movie of, er, well probably ever and it made so much noise upon its release that we’re still talking about it months later.

Robert Downey Jr was a clear stand out in the movie, and the directors of the movie, Joe and Anthony Russo, are making it clear they’re ready to campaign for him to get an Oscar for his work in the film.

During an interview with The Daily Beast, Joe said, “I just want to stump for one thing, and that’s Robert Downey… We don’t make movies for awards. Yes, making this was exceedingly difficult. We made the two most expensive movies ever back-to-back.

“But I just want to stump for one thing, and that’s Robert Downey. I don’t know if I have ever seen – in movie history – a global audience react to a performance the way they did to Robert Downey in that movie.

“There were people bawling in movie theaters, hyperventilating. I mean, that is a profound performance, when you can touch audiences all over the world to that degree. We’ve never seen anything like that, and if that doesn’t deserve an Oscar, I don’t know what does.”

And we actually have to agree with him on that one. He should at least be nominated, right?!

However, we all know that when it comes to the Academy Awards, the accolades are more often than not given to smaller, lesser-seen movies that often cover morally complicated topics rather than big-budget films.

Is it possible that Endgame could actually make waves this awards season? We’re not going to bet on it, but it wouldn’t be unlikely for the film to pick up a few nominations for the behind the scenes work.

The movie currently has a 94 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes with most reviews saying they strongly recommend it.

Downey has previously scored himself two Oscar nominations for Chaplin and for Tropic Thunder – which was quite an unconventional selection.

As Joe said, it’s unlikely there’ll be another actor this year who will make more people cry in cinemas than Downey, so maybe there is a tiny chance he’ll be considered?
