We’re not far off seeing DC’s standalone Aquaman movie, which at best may be damp, campy fun, and at worst will be an absurd slog that at least allows us to look at a largely-shirtless Jason Momoa for two hours or so.
Me, getting in line for either of the above.
Today in “I did not see that coming at all but holy strapping fishman I am HERE FOR IT”, it was just revealed that Dame Julie Andrews will play a “pivotal” role in the film.
Yes, the Queen of Genovia herself.
(Some audiences may also know Andrews for her work on a couple of minor cult hits in the 1960s.)
Andrews will not be appearing as her regal self, however – she’s the voice of the Karathen, a mythical underwater beast who helps Arthur Curry/Aquaman on his quest to reconcile Atlantea and the human world.
““We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered,” Aquaman producer Peter Safran told Entertainment Weekly. “And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.”
An Industrial Light and Magic artist who worked on painting the character describes it as “gargantuan”, all “legs and claws… plates, leather and scales”, with “algae and dirt in the cracks” and “lots of scratches and… old healed scars”.
If that isn’t the role Julie Andrews was born to play, I don’t know what is.
Presumably, the Karathen’s help will take the form of ancient, cryptic ocean lore, proper curtsying technique, and possibly a chorus or two of ‘I Have Confidence”.
Just like this, but with big sharks and bigger pecs.
Aquaman is out in Australia on December 13.
