Anna Wintour Gives Scott Morrison And Margaret Court A Serve On LGBTQ+ Rights

"A government should protect its people, not make it unclear whether they will be accepted.”

Vogue US editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, queen of fashion and also of tennis fangirls, used her speech at the Australian Open to support the renaming of Margaret Court Arena due to Court’s homophobic views, and also directly criticised the Prime Minister and Australian government over the LGBTQ+ students debate.

“I have been alarmed by your prime minister’s record on LGBTQ rights, which seems backward in all senses,” Wintour said during her speech at the Australian Open Inspiration Series in Melbourne, as reported by Fairfax.

“That no one can be expelled from school for their orientation, should not require clarification. A government should protect its people, not make it unclear whether they will be accepted.”

She also said that Margaret Court basically had no business being honoured on the arena that currently bears her name, given her openly homophobic views.

“I find that it is inconsistent with the sport for Margaret Court’s name to be on a stadium that does so much to bring all people together across their differences… [A] meeting point of players of all nations, preferences and backgrounds should celebrate somebody who was a champion off the court as well.”

“Intolerance has no place in tennis.”

Note: this is even more satisfying if you imagine Morrison and Court withering in this icy blast like Emily Blunt being told off by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.
