Audible For Dogs Is Now A Thing That Exists, So Get Amongst It If You Want To Encourage Your Dogs' Literary Aspirations

Alexa, play Hairy Maclary.

Amazon has just released a curated collection of audiobooks designed just for your canine companion.

The collection is the result of a collaboration with Osher Günsberg and animal behaviourist, Dr Susan Hazel, and it was inspired by a study conducted by Hartpury College that found that listening to audiobooks can positively influence kennelled dogs’ behaviour, encouraging them to spend “less time alert and more time resting”, even when compared with other influences like music.

The Audible for Dogs library includes two audiobook bundles: the Aussie Collection, and the Classics Collection.

G’day sirs.

All of the audiobooks were chosen for their calming narration, evenly paced narrative, and length (to ensure they cover a full work-day).

The Aussie Collection includes Cloudstreet by Tim Winton and Red Dog by Louis de Bernières, and the Classics Collection includes Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal!)

There’s an entire library beyond those two collections though, including Osher’s favourite, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Plus, $1 from the sale of every audiobook in the Audible for Dogs collection will go to the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home!

Osher explained why he got involved with Audible for Dogs:

“I’m passionate about mental health, and that extends to my dog, Frankie’s, wellbeing too. I’m stoked to partner with Audible to bring spoken-word entertainment to Aussie dogs to help keep them company when we’re out and about. I feel more at ease knowing Frankie is in the company of specially curated audiobooks chosen for their calm and even narration. Lately, I’ve been leaving him listening to The Lord of the Rings which, he seems to enjoy.”

If it’s good enough for Osher, it’s good enough for me. Now if only I had a dog to play Big Little Lies for…
